How to Accessorize Your Evening Dress

By John Jones

The great thing about formal dresses is that you can wear them at so many different occasions, such as proms, dinners, weddings and evening parties.Although they do tend to come in many different forms, they tend to be long skirted and Prom Dress 2012also quite glamorous! They are certainly not usually what you'd call casual in any case!Let's explore formal dresses and how you can get a really suitable one for yourself:

Forget The Mannequin. When you're shopping for formal dresses you have to remember that the dress on the mannequin is just there for display. Mannequins can be ordered in certain sizes, but it's unlikely that the store you're at is using mannequins that are your size, therefore a dress that looks good on them may not look so good when it's on you!

How do we remedy this issue then? Don't worry, this is going to be fun, as you'll need to try on as many formal dresses as you can!Focus On Your Body Shape. You should know your own body shape, so are you a pear, apple etc? If you aren't sure then jump online and do some quick research into 'women's body shapes' in a search engine. You'll be able to see which matches your shape.Armed with this knowledge you can now look to finding a formal dress that will flatter your shape best.

Heels and Clutches.Considering the formality, you will find it's not possible to complement your evening dress with a pair of flats. If possible, wear high heels. Avoid chunky heels and the majority of wedges which are suitable for casual events. They don't really match the refinement of the evening dress. If you choose a dark dress as your evening gown, it can be difficult to go wrong with the same color high heels. If you don't wear high heels often, practice in them first. If you look uncomfortable walking in the high heels, it will detract from the ensemble of the attire.

Petite girls should try not to get a dress that is too wide as it will accentuate their short height. So imagine a typical princess gown with a billowing dress, this will swamp shorter girls, so instead think about a dress with vertical lines (which gives the illusion of more height) and also short skirts, as long skirts can leave shorter girls looking swamped once again.

Wraps and Stoles. If you choose a gown with little fabric, sleeveless or strapless, a wrap would be a great choice for adding an elegance touch to your ensemble. A silk stole which matches or contrasts would complete the gown considerably. In the cold weather, faux furs wrap can complement your warm look properly. Wraps and stoles could be draped on your shoulders or just through your elbows. Stay away from a very long wrap and choose a shorter and wider one.
