One of the most important historical landmarks in the city of Milan is the Sforzesco Castle where in lived the family of Sforzesco that ruled Milan during the 15th and the 16th century.

The art gallery at the Sforzesco Castle in Milan which is open to public has a remarkable collection of Italian and European art chiefly singled out from the renaissance period. Famous works of artists namely Bellini, Mantegna, Van Dyck and Correggio are exhibited in this castle.

Behind this castle in Milan are the grounds which today serve as a public garden. The total area of the garden is about 50 hectares and contains enchanting flower beds making it a good place to ease up for a while to get away from the hustle and bustle of Milan.

The Cathedral of Milan offers the most historic and religious architecture of Milan and it is a fact that the tour of Milan starts from here. It was in the 14th century that this Cathedral was originally built though many alterations were made in the later centuries in its structure.

The Cathedral in Milan can take over 40,000 people and it is currently the fourth largest Cathedral in the world. It stuck to the Gothic style of architecture and this is apparent from the structure of more than 100 spires that could be seen on the cathedral. In addition to being an architectural wonder, this cathedral houses thousands of statues of religious heads that figured in the Italian and Christian history.

Perhaps the most famous of these statues on the cathedral is a copper statue of the Virgin Mary located on top of the longest spire in the cathedral which is more than 100 metres in length. For an excellent view of Milan you may go to the roof of the Cathedral, although this costs 4 Euros whereas entrance to the general grounds of the Cathedral in Milan is free.

Milan houses one of the masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci the world acclaimed painter and it is the Last Supper that belonged to the 15th century and which depicted the last supper Jesus had with his disciples. It was during the supper that he revealed that one of them would betray him.

Although the painting has declined at various times over the last five centuries, it has been largely restored with meticulous care and is available for the public to view.

A prior appointment well in advance is required to see this marvellous work of art in Milan. 6 Euros have to be paid as the fee to have a view of this art at the allotted time.
