It worked perfectly! With the cost of food going up this little thing is going to save me big money! If you have room to store this where you will not forget about it, then you should definitely buy it. Who knew that everything you put in it comes out tasting better and is more convenient to eat" After reading about some brands that had a price tag well into the hundreds I deemed my ownership of a dehydrator a lost cause. That was until I found this bad boy (bad as in good).
I use this dehydrator mainly to make dried chicken and beef strips for my dog and dogs I board on occasion. I also make salmon strips for them.
As other reviews mentioned, things took longer than the instruction book stated. I think there is just a trial and error factor involved in drying. A timer would've been nice too but, like someone else said, you can always buy a cheap timer. I don't have any other dehydrator experience to compare it to, but I am very happy with my selection! It's a lot cheaper to dry your own onions, than buy them in the spice aisle at the grocery store. Sprinkle some on a burger while it's cooking, and it gives it a great flavor. I was researching dehydrators to make my own jerky and food for backpacking and hiking. The one that came back as the 'most bang for the buck' was this one. Second, there is no timer on the unit. Thus, you cannot "set it and forget it." I just couldn't imagine it could be as good as all the reviews said it was. I was also concerned about some of the features that seemed like they would be important such as no timer and a top mounted fan (as compared to a side mounted which supposedly created irregular dehydrating times).
I made both of those recipes - it worked out to the T! If you want to have a handy, sturdy food dehydrator this one is for you, affordable and it does the job.
One reviewer said the machine was somewhat loud, I don't think it is that loud, unless you run it at night and are a light sleeper. I put a timer on the cord but it would be nice if this was on the machine in the future. For my friends who are striving for healthier diets, I can make leathers or other foods that are easily vegan friendly or free of artificial preservatives, yet that last for a long time. You can easily mess with recipes for fun results too. When I started thinking about purchasing a dehydrator, I did a lot of research including visiting my local Cabelas store and doing a lot of online research. The main reason that I initially shied away from purchasing this model was how inexpensive it was compared to so many of the other models.
I can honestly tell you that for the price, with this dehydrator, you get exactly what the average person needs for effective and efficient small to medium sized batch drying. of course, I wish it had an on/ off switch and a timer, but you can get a timer/ power control (similar to what you'd use for Christmas lights) and use that so it's not a deal breaker for me- especially at this price.
