Like No Other Place on Earth: the Galapagos Islands

By Austin Thomas

The Galapagos Islands are unlike any other place on Earth. There are a variety of cruises and tours to the islands, and there's something to try and appeal to all visitors. From the abundant marine wildlife, the odd animals, and the uneven volcanic terrain, there is something certain to please everybody.

You can select a tour of the Galapagos based primarily on what sort of time you have available. In this characteristic environment, there are only five islands that have people living on them. The rest of the islands are part of the National Park system, which protects 97% of the area. On a tour of the area, you will see 100 yearold giant tortoises, blue footed birds, and sea iguanas and flightless cormorants together in the blue water.

A cruise of the Galapagos allows you to notice the differences among the species from island to island. If you look closely, you may notice how different the finches, or buntings, are from one island to the next. The finches were one of the species studied by Charles Darwin on his expedition to the Galapagos in the 1800s.

There are numerous different Galapagos cruises available, from yachts with sails to luxury boats, to enormous ships with room for 90 passengers. Each cruise has its own highly trained guide to show you round the islands and explain the animal species and what they meant to Darwin's studies.

There are one or two hotels on the islands, for those who wish to stay on land rather than on a ship. On Santa Cruz Island is the Royal Palm hotel, and exclusive, isolated property. There's also the award-winning Finch Bay Eco resort and private beach. Or you can go with the Red Mangrove Galapagos Lodge tours, where you move between 3 islands over the course of five days.

Most Galapagos Islands tours leave from Guayaquil, the largest town in Ecuador. Some tours leave from Peru. You can put together your own plan with many tour operators, so be certain to investigate what you want to see on land before you leave for the islands. For instance, a tour of Machu Picchu would be a great addition to any vacation!
