Serge Lutens And His Creative Mind

By Lucile Brooks

French native Serge Lutens has had his hand dipped in all aspects of fashion throughout his 50 year career. Photographer, cosmetics designer, fragrance creator, art director, and fashion designer are all names that have defined his empire and legacy. He has worked at world renowned companies like Vogue, Christian Dior, and Shiseido. After helping to build up these brands Lutens branched out and created his own brand through his name alone.

His career began as a makeup artist and creative stylist. In the late 1960s he was a part of the creative process behind Christian Dior. In the 1980s he moved on to Shiseido until the late 1990s he began his own perfume line and later a cosmetics brand.

In the early 1990s he began his own house of perfumes that launched in 2000. This same perfume line can be found in multiple department stores and boutiques across the world in various fragrances and sizes. The fragrance line has both an export and exclusive line with operations held in France.

Another area Serge was able to influence through his talents is directly related to fashion. He also has a worldwide known cosmetics line. The line includes everything from eyeliner to blush and foundation. His cosmetic line can also be found at various boutiques and retail stores and can also be purchased online.

Lutens added another notch to his creative belt when he became an author in 1992. He created a book based on photography with a heavy hand from his experience as art director at Shiseido. His first book was available in 16 colors. It was only natural that he follow up his first book with his second in 1998 known as a deluxe edition.

By branding himself Serge was not only able to create his own fashion brand, he also strengthened and created depth to other fashion lines. There are many ways to describe this artist extraordinaire as he continues to innovate fashion.
