Choosing A Colorado Camping Tent

By Carol Lewis

Your priority is figuring out what kind of camping you're going to use the tent for. Camping with your car or van at an established campsite requires different kinds of camping tents than walking into a wilderness site. A Colorado Camping tent falls into three broad categories: "A" frame, dome, and cabin styles.

What kind of a canvas do you buy You could buy a canvas or rent one according to your budget and the families requirements. You would have to bare in mind the number of people who would occupy the canvas, the durability of it, it should be strong and of water proof material to withstand the rains and the winds, should have enough ventilation and also protect you against the insects.

Dome tents resemble high-tech igloos and use three or more poles depending on configuration. Models can sleep from two to eight people. Some dome styles allow you to stand erect inside, while others have little headroom. As a general rule, dome tents are the easiest to erect, once you learn the basics. Plus they can often be moved, while pitched if you discover the ground is more suitable a few feet away.

How veteran campers select their tents Campers who are experienced and are veterans at it always consider the worst conditions that they may have to come across before deciding on the kind of tent they should buy. Though tents that are called the 3 season tents are more popular, it is wiser to go in for a 4 season one for conditions that may be quite extreme in mountainous regions with the winters being quite heavy.

All of this tends to over-simplify, because many camp tents are hybrids, combining features of all three styles. These often are identified as "modified domes"---which covers quite a bit of ground. Over the years my family has used just about every style of canvas. Our very first family camp trip, for instance, was made with a cabin canvas. We had a pair of toddlers, a crib, a portable potty, mounds of clothing, and sundry other items. As the boys grew, so did our interests, from family camp to backpacking, which called for high-tech packing tents. By the time the kids were in their teens, they were camp on their own, and we expanded our interest to whitewater rafting and four-wheeling. For these activities, a modified dome fit the bill.

Canvas Ratings- Canvas ratings may be new for novice campers. It is all based upon the occupancy and seasonal rating. Canvass that provide good ventilation during summers or warm weather are known as the 1- season canvass. But these 1- season canvass are not good during heavy rains. You should opt for a 3-season canvas if you want to withstand light snow, heavy rain and ensure good ventilation.

If you don't object to crawling in and out of your tent on hands and knees, a backpacking tent is ideal. They are lightweight and, when folded, make a small package. This also makes them perfect for canoe and bicycle camp, where weight and bulk are considerations.

Wall tents and cabin tents come under this category as they come under the group camping one. These tents are too heavy for back packing and are better suited for carrying by car to your camp site. You could go for geodesic tents, and modified domes which have curved and criss crossed poles and are easier to pack and weigh a lot less too, though they can hold the same number of people as other tents.
