If you plan on joining your first marathon or running competition first, the first aspect to keep in mind is the preparation needed for joining such a physically and mentally demoing competition. Apart from allocating your spare time in training and conditioning your mind and body for the upcoming event, it also involves preparing the clothing you shall be wearing. If you ever watched or have seen these competitions before, you will surely have noticed how all the participants are wearing relevant articles of clothing.

However, not many people are aware of its implications and the general etiquette that should be in place when it comes to what outfit is appropriate or not. To remedy this, a list of protocols and guidelines have been compiled in this article for the reference of people that plan on participating on a local race event in their area or for those who have been on a hiatus from the community for a while now. The most well known and highly unspoken rule within the racing community would be to never wear a shirt or other articles of clothing, unless you actually participated in it beforehand. Although exceptions to this rule exists, such as the volunteers that helped in organizing it and ensuring its success. Otherwise, do not do so unless you plan on being ridiculed or pointed out as a neophyte.

Furthermore, any clothing that was received or taken from a competition that did not reach the shortest allowable distance for a marathon should not be worn when the gathering organized is that of an ultra marathon. The same particular rule applies when donning those from sprints to events like the Ironman challenge. It does not particularly make a statement and displays more of a beginner level, unless that is something that the wearer is aiming for. Otherwise, it would be best to stick to generic athletic brands and logos instead.

In case one is returning to the same competition that they did many years ago, wearing the same shirt they got during that year is acceptable. Ideally, it should be the one you wore during your first time or when you first accomplished it. This shows your level of superiority against other athletes and shows the commitment you have to yourself and the sport too.

Unlike common belief, it is taken into consideration a novice error for many proficient joggers when newbies typically use something that was provided on the exact same day of stated competitors. It makes their novice degree far more obvious and presents an absence of stability. That, the majority of experts think that doing so triggers poor good luck and although it does not actually have any kind of solid evidence or proof of this, it would be ideal not to jinx it as well.

When people wear a certain shirt from a previous competition, it often means that they participated and finished it before. Otherwise, there would be no reason for them to don it at said event. DNFs or runners that did not finish often commit this mistake and then other athletes are dismayed to find out they actually did not finish it.

While a common practice that people usually do is purchasing extra pairs and giving it to friends or family that participated. Although widely done, it is frowned upon as these were especially printed for the runners. As a matter of fact, this may sometimes lead to an insufficient stock left for other runners that trained and worked hard to compete.

Overall, discussed above are the proper guidelines for donning these clothes. Keeping these in mind helps adhere to it. As a result, you will become more accepted within the community.
