By Sean Burns

Manufacturing a wide range of knives and kitchenware, the Global brand is one of the world's most famous cutlery designers. Designed to cater to a wide audience which includes both the home and commercial markets, the Global knife collection can be tailored to meet your cooking needs. In 1985, Komin Yamada based on his Samurai background to create a range of strong, supple and extremely sharp knives designed to be used around the kitchen. He used some of the best craftsmanship and materials to create his range which is now respected as one of the best in the world.

Yamada wanted to make a variety of knives that could be used by everyone from amateurs to professional. He wanted the knives to be of the finest craftsmanship and yet be incredibly simple and comfortable for the user. Using the best materials and innovative techniques, Yamada manufactured a range of knives based on the Samurai principles, giving a sharp, concise cut and allowing users to work to the finest levels of perfection.

Global kitchen knives have two main features that set them aside from other regular knives. The first feature is the edge of the knife which is cut to form a very acute and sharp edge, used for precision slicing. Global knives are sharpened on both sides of their blades, similar to Western knives, however the difference lies in the tip, with Global knives using their far more acute cut to produce a sharper knife which stays sharper for longer.

The balance of the knives are also different, as the Global range feature hollow handles which are filled with small amounts of sand in order to achieve a perfect working balance. Replacing the usual tang and bolster, the use of sand is designed to allow for a more even balance of the knife handle.

Although Global knives do find themselves at the more expensive end of the market, this is mainly because of the fine craftsmanship and materials that go into producing such a fine range of knives.
