Sheridan's Art Celebration and Cowboy Inheritance

By Henri Dupree

Sheridan WY

Within Sheridan Wyoming's historic setting is a region rich in culture. Visitors to Sheridan WY in the summer should head to scenic Kendrick Park on Tuesday evenings for the once per week Concert in the Park series. Come early; the whole family will enjoy the beautiful environment.

On the way, be sure to look out for various public sculptures displayed in the downtown area. This Art on the Plaza exhibit is a continual display expanded every June during Celebrate the Arts Month.

One more tip for art fans; every Aug Sheridan College hosts the Big West Arts Festival, a celebration of artists from across the country. Bring along an appetite to the Festival, it also offers tempting treats from a bunch of culinary artists.

Sheridan's Cowboy InheritanceInheritance

Throughout the year in Sheridan, cowboys keep rodeo fever alive with weekly rodeos and roping competitions. It all finishes each July at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo, a one week celebration of the region's cowboy heritage.

Another great example of latter-day Western excitement is Don King Days in September. First class cow hands compete in roping, riding and even polo (a favorite local sport) to honor the founder of historic King's Saddlery.

To submerge yourself fully in Western lore, plan to attend the Sagebrush Cowboy Gathering each Feb. Cowboy musicians, poets and storytellers will excite with tales of the Wild West. There's something for each age group, including a kid's poetry contest.

Museums, shops and galleries across the Sheridan Wyoming area continue to commemorate the area's rugged Western history. Look for wonderful examples of leather and silver work, particularly.

Come for Sheridan's History, Stay for the Beauty

Whatever the reason you come to Sheridan, whether to learn how the West was won or to celebrate the beauty of the Big Horns, you will find yourself looking to stay.

The people of this quiet mountain town have learned the value of preserving their heritage while looking to the future.
