Shopping For An Engagement Ring Setting

By Elizabeth Harrison

Are you thinking about buying a diamond ring for someone special, then you may or may not know that the type of setting that you choose for the diamonds is one of the most important factors. There are lots of different ways to put a diamond into a ring, and if you're not very familiar with these kinds of rings, then it can be confusing. Here are a few different types of settings for diamond rings.

We'll start with the diamond solitaire setting, in which one diamond is lifted up from the surface of the ring by a few metal prongs. It's by far the most common type of setting, since it gives all the attention to the center stone, and doesn't have anything to distract from its beauty and sparkle.

This kind of setting is found most commonly among engagement rings, where the center of attention is the diamond -- how big it is, how much fire it has, etc. This setting shows off the diamond better than any other, and for this reason, you'll probably be safe with the solitaire setting if you will be buying an engagement ring soon.

The next kind of setting is called the pave setting (pronounced pah-vay), and is very similar to the solitaire. However, instead of just one center diamond, there are many smaller diamonds on either side of the center stone. The amount of metal between the smaller diamonds is very minimal, which gives the illusion that the entire surface of the ring is made of diamonds.

This setting is a popular choice for engagement rings as well, but unlike the solitaire setting, it's not restricted to being used in engagement rings only. It's a more versatile type of setting, and because it has more sparkle from the additional smaller diamonds, it can be used for wedding bands, anniversary rings, and other special occasions. The recipient will love the ring, regardless of what occasion it is for.

Another popular style of setting for diamond rings is the side stone style, which is self-explanatory. In addition to featuring a beautiful center diamond, there are also two other diamonds on either side that are just a little bit smaller than the center stone. The side stone is a popular choice because the two additional stones allow more light to pass through them and through the middle stone, which adds more fire and beauty to the ring.

There is a wide variety of occasions for which the side stone setting would be appropriate. It is not commonly used for engagement rings, since those rings tend to feature just one diamond. However, the side stone can be used for wedding bands, promise rings, and a multitude of other occasions.

These are just a few of the most popular types of settings for diamond rings. If you're not sure which one is the best for you, never hesitate to ask a professional for advice. There are so many different ways of putting diamonds into a ring. You're bound to find one that is right for you!
