Excellent Option For Me - Snackmaster Jr Dehydrator Review

By Ashley Murphy

After reading about some brands that had a price tag well into the hundreds I deemed my ownership of a dehydrator a lost cause. That was until I found this bad boy (bad as in good).

This is one of those items that does exactly what it says it's going to do and does it without a fuss. It's simple to use (even I haven't screwed up anything with it yet) and works extremely well.

These aren't deal-breakers to me because drying fruit is not a precision art. I especially wanted this food dehydrator for banana.

It is not a lot of fun when they are dry to remove them from a round shaped tray with a giant hole in the middle. Very quiet and has a large capacity. There are obviously a couple things that I would improve, but I would never expect a product that works this well for this price to be perfect.

The dehydrator is easy to use and clean. Considering the price of 'sun-dried' tomatoes, I expect this to pay back before the growing season ends.

The book has many recipes and includes recipes for pet treats, drying crafts, dough ornaments and potpourri. Or make healthy snacks and foods without corn syrup. Not to mention the high sodium contents and many use monosodium glutamate (MSG)! I found this one to be a good mid-priced dehydrator - it would allow us to make meat jerky, dehydrate fruits and vegetables, as well as make our own fruit roll ups. My only complaint seems to be the same as others - no timer. I'm going to go to the hardware store and get one of those plug-in timers. The dried apples are fantastic and the initial price was great (because I had a rebate through my credit card) but I'm seriously worried about my electricity bill so makes me wonder if it's worth it in the long run. I have not been disappointed, although it has only been used to dry liver and sweet potatoes so far. The dogs loved their snacks.

I also got the Sylvania SA110 15 Amp Heavy Duty Appliance Timer for an extra $13 since this unit does not have a built in timer. This is perfect for dehydrating fruits or meats overnight or while I'm at work without having to worry about over or under drying the food. We were overloaded with tomatoes and hot peppers this summer, and I was so glad to have this. May try jerky this winter when the hunters in the family have too much venison. Since this timer is rated at 15 amps, should not prove to be any problem with the Nesco-75. Basically the timer is a small knob into which you plug the Nesco at the front; it takes up virtually no countertop space.
