Our lifestyle has a contributory effect on our health. Having less sleep than our bodies need, coupled with the stresses and strains of tewnty-first century living, it is very likely that the internal state of the body will be far from healthy.
Deteriorating teeth are invariably a symptom of deteriorating health within the body. Despite all this the main cause of tooth decay and poor gum conditions is the poor-quality of processed foods and the sugars/artificial sweeteners and the chemicals they contain. These simply don't benefit the body. Though sugars have unquestionably become part of our 21st century lifestyle there are so many better alternatives to sugar substitutes.
'Superstore' Food:
It's worth keeping a regular check on the ingredients of pre-packaged and processed foods. Supermarkets display masses of packaged food products that are undoubtedly part of the nation's health problem. Ready-made foods have a few things in common:
- Low nutritional value
- High in saturated fatty acids and sugars
- Loaded in additives
......some solely designed to grab the attention of our impressionable children.
Shops have become adept at product placement because of the inducement revenues they receive for this. Handily placed at eye level or close to the checkout counters for last-minute impulse buying, ready meals often contain:
- Industrially-recovered meat including connective tissues
- The last scraps of meat and offal left on a carcass following slaughter.
A typical pudding aimed at kids may contain 'approved ' additives such as gelling agents, emulsifiers and colourings as well as sodium, phosphate and citrate additives. Who on earth authorised them? If you aren't familiar with what they are or what purpose they serve it doesn't really matter. It is sufficient to know that they don't need to be in the food we eat.
Whatever happened to real food?
Processed foods command premium positioning and are aggressively promoted because the more processes involved with the production of food, the higher the margin of profit. If supermarkets sold only fresh regional goods their profits would be significantly lower, but we might all be a lot more healthy. Sadly we're very aware how corporate interests impact our wellbeing.....unless we stop buying their foods. READ THE LABELS.
Junk food is fun and convenient to eat now and then but longer term, the debatable ingredients will make the producers of pre-processed food have much to answer for. Time for a clean out
