What Small Business IT Needs Should Be Answered First

By Byron Jonas

In the beginning the needs of a small business began with a typewriter and cash register. Nowadays in this modern age, the small business has more complicated and more sophisticated needs as technology changes or has changed. In this day and age there are small business IT needs that should be strongly considered.

The most basic need of course will be a computer or a computer terminal. If the business is small enough with less than five people then no more than two computers are really needed. A connection to the internet is also needed to facilitate communications either by email or fax internet.

On this computer a database should also be set up or installed. This database can contain everything from employee records to relevant inventories of stock and materials. It can likewise also contain list of potential clients and contacts that can be tapped in the future to increase revenue.

The purchase or installation of accounting software for sales, payrolls and the like should be done. This accounting software will also be useful when tax season comes around the corner as well. In the absence of an accounting software due to restrictions on budget or size, then an appropriate spreadsheet program will do.

The company will also need a webpage. This is very much needed due to the virtual world that we all are connected to. This webpage can likewise be linked to Facebook and Twitter pages for maximum coverage and visibility. In addition, an effort to be listed also on local web directories should be done to increase marketability.

Aggressive marketing on internet with articles and forums should also be done. Active presence on the niche market forums that the company is in will help generate not only virtual traffic to the business but hopefully physical traffic as well. Likewise an email marketing campaign can also be done since it is of minimal cost.

And most importantly the people working in the company should all be computer literate. More skilled employees translated to more work and diversity in work being done. It also means that there will be a lesser need to hire more employees and this likewise translates to lesser cost in the short run.
