Burning Spear music is among the great reggae category of musical pieces which is well known across the Diaspora. He promotes peace, unity and harmony in his tracks and has done several classic albums since he started music. Rodney teaches the youths and reggae fans about the righteous ways. He fights for equality and encourages the Africans to maintain their culture and not be deceived. He feature heroes like Marcus Garvey in his tracks for they fought for the rights of the blacks.
His musical career started when he met with the legendary Bob Marley. Bob advised him to enroll in the studio where he (Bob himself) did record his songs. Together with Rupert Willington, they managed to record their first three songs which they named them as Door peep. Later, after the album became popular, another artist by the name Delroy joined the group. Rodney then later released a chain of single tracks.
His lyrics were full of emotions and anger of oppression but with a deep sense of holiness. Some of his early songs included Ethiopians live it out, Zion Higher and We are Free. All of them revolved around the cultural themes of repatriation, religious devotion and oppression.
Both the slavery days and Marcus Garvey tracks were released after spear and his band members joined forces with producer Jack Ruby. A full album by the name Marcus Garvey was later released and it turned out to be the highly rated that Jamaica has ever released. Later Rodney joined the island label and continued with his career.
In order to maintain his position in the music industry, he set up an own label with his name and debuted it with the single Traveling. Two more singles named Spear Burning and The Youth quickly followed. In the 1970s, Man in the Hills was released and it emphasized more on the rural themes.
Rodney with his two band mates broke up but he retained the name Burning spear. The singer was just by himself when he released the album Dry and Heavy. After signing his label to EMI, spear recorded a brand new album Hail H. I. M. At Bob Marley studios. Rodney entered a new era when he began exploring non cultural themes. It was at this stage that he did a track by the name She is Mine.
Winston did the fittest of the fittest which was out shined by the album Resistance. A number of his albums have been nominated at the Grammy award and have earned him great honor and respect including resistance and calling Rastafarian. Mistress music was poorly produced and did not do well in the industry although a better album known as Live in Paris was produced the same year.
Winston returned to Island after a European tour and opened a new account there with Mek We Dweet. By now Rodney was recording consumer friendly roots music. Jah Kingdom is among the Burning Spear music which was released in the early 1990s. His next album The World should know earned him another Grammy award. This album was cemented with Love and Peace and Rastafarian messages.
