Allan Drury, the Founder of Catskiing, Passed Away in 2008 - Yet Allan's Spirit Continues to Live On!

It has been stated that "necessity is the Mother of invention" and although this may be true, in several circumstances it will also be argued that "acumen, interest and a motivation to think outside the envelope" are important contributors in terms of inventors and the way they "get" their ideas.

Catskiing was created within the stunning BC mountains, over 25 years ago, by Allan Drury and his wife when he realized that the ski hill grooming vehicles, which up to now had been used just for "grooming", would make an excellent mode for evaluating British Columbia cat skiing trails - provided, of course, that there were accessible roads to travel on. From there, history was made.

Because of his resourcefulness, Allan is most definitely accredited as being the inventor of catskiing, in addition to being recognized as its pioneer. Having promoted the sport of cat skiing to its current level, Allan was able by some means to combine the challenge and pleasure of skiing previously unknown backcountry terrain into the hobby of catskiing that we now so thoroughly enjoy!

While this concept was immediately seized upon by a group of devoted skiing enthusiasts who were more than delighted to discover yet another new way to take pleasure in a favorite hobby, it has really only been in the last 10 to fifteen years that the idea of catskiing has really gained main stream acceptance - particularly in regions such as Canada (where it's estimated that 90 percent of the cat skiing trade will be found), the USA, New Zealand as well as, surprisingly, Chile.

As with a lot of ideas, technological innovations have had a hand in helping to "improve" the popularity of the hobby, by offering "snow cats" that can comfortably carry a group of people up incredibly steep grades and over harsh terrain - thereby improving the overall experience for any cat skiing aficionado.

As the hobby of catskiing becomes even more popular and as increasingly more "baby boomers", in addition to the youthful generations, embrace and seek out the challenges and discoveries that catskiing provides, it is apparent that catskiing continues to grow and is here for the long term.

Knowing all this, it's comforting to recognize that in spite of the recent passing of Allan Drury, the sport of catskiing continues to grow and bring together new followers. Thankfully, Drury enjoyed a long and joyful life and was witness to only how widespread his "invention" turned out to be. We are thankful that Allan left all skiers with such a beautiful legacy.
