Creative Writing & 3 Reasons To Get Involved In College

By Katie Arden

For those who are curious as to how one's college experience can be expanded, I believe attention should be brought to creative writing. These types of classes allow for such a level of creative freedom that other courses may not be able to rival it. If you're looking to enhance your writing abilities, maybe you'll take up this opportunity. For those who may not be as ready to jump at the chance, here are 3 talking points to help sway your decision on the matter.

Creative writing, to start off, will not only familiarize you with different styles of writing but how they may be carried out more effective. To put this into different terms, let's say that you like to enjoy constructing poetry but are curious about how to take part in the writing process. You may start to learn about various forms of poetry, ranging from haikus to imagery poems. To potentially learn about writing these, it would make sense to enroll in a creative writing course.

Criticism is another reason why creative writing matters in a college classroom environment. For example, if you write a piece and recite it to the class, you may learn that some of your sentences are fragmented, or that the grammar may be off in certain places. These bits of criticism are not meant to deter you from future writing endeavors. In fact, you can be certain that these will be able to help you better understand how you can write more effectively.

Despite the previous point, it's just as easy to see that creative writing classes can instill self-confidence. Even if your work has imperfections, there may be enough potential to where it can not only be viewed by your fellow students but the instructor as well. When you know what your strengths are, you're able to write more effectively. Everyone wants to know where they do well, in terms of schoolwork, and creative writing helps to bring this concept to the table.

Isn't it obvious why so many people decide to take up creative writing courses during their time in college? Some may see these classes as learning experience, in and of themselves, which allows them to absorb information they probably couldn't obtain somewhere else. It's also worth noting that many these classes as ways to unwind from the more demanding courses in college. Simply put, there are more than a few reasons why creative writing stands out.
