The Basics Of Any Skateboard Brand

By Margaret Ward

A skateboard is a sports equipment used for skateboarding. These devices come in a wide range of design to suit different applications. Most producers usually produce most of the types of skateboards currently in the market. The international market has any skateboard brand one may want. Materials used in construction are diverse, but most commonly, the devices are made from Maplewood board together with polyurethane coating.

Longboards and shortboards are the two key classifications of skateboards. Like suggested in the names, longboards are bigger in size and other major aspects compared to shortboards. They attain higher top speeds and are bigger in size. Their wheelbases are similarly longer, a feature that is very instrumental in achieving higher top speeds. They vary in size a lot, but they will typically measure over 90 centimeters in some cases.

The wheels of longboards are larger and are often made softer. The big size of the wheels makes them suitable for use in rough terrains. They have better ability to move through mud and rugged landscape. Because of their ability to move faster, longboards are often used for racing and cruising. Conversely, shortboards are used for performing tricks. They are made with a more concave shape to enhance their ability to perform tricks.

One must have the skills in order to ride a skateboard. Lack of proper skills is likely to result in falls, which may cause a lot of serious injuries. When riding, one has to propel the device with one foot while keeping the other foot on the board. This is particularly true for the traditional manual models. The emergence of electric skateboards which is made possible by technological advancement has changed the situation.

Propulsion by foot is no longer necessary with the invention of electric models. These one have electric motors for propulsion. Electric batteries provide power for the electric motor. Skateboards come in many colors including white gray, yellow, and black. Others have multiple colors while other include graphical content.

Modern models of skateboards incorporate many features intended to improve efficiency, functionality, and user safety. Grip tape is one example of features that promote safety of the user in these devices. Grip tapes are made in the form of sheets of paper or fabric that are attached to the deck of the device. The other side is made rough to provide grip for the foot when riding.

Wheels are typically made from polyurethane. They vary in hardness, size, shape and other aspects to suit different skating applications. Bigger wheels measure between 55 and 85 mm, which makes them suitable for transition skateboarding. Wheels with smaller diameters are suitable for street skateboarding since they allow for lower top speed, lower center of gravity, and better response time.

The Shore durometer A scale is used in measuring the hardness of wheels. The range of hardness runs from soft to very hard. The use of D and B scales is becoming common among producers because of the limitation in the A scale. D and B scales are very wide and accommodate a wide range of hardness.
