What To Expect When You Want To Explore Ethiopia

By Marie Kelly

Visiting a new country is usually fun. However, it can also have its challenges. In order to make the most of your trip, you must be well prepared and know what to expect. Here are some tips that will come in handy when you want to explore Ethiopia.

The security in the country is quite good. There are not many cases of tourists or people in general being harmed by criminals. But this does not mean that you should not take care of yourself and your property when you are in the country. You should generally be on the watch out for petty thieves and pickpockets. This is especially when you are in crowded places.

You will be able to access Internet services. However, you will need to buy a data card since there are not many places with wi fi. You can get wifi in select places such as restaurants and airports. There are also cyber cafes from which you can access Internet, even though some remote places might just have a few cyber cafes. To buy a data card, you will need an identification document and passport photos.

You will need to use your phone a lot when you are in this country. This is so that you can talk to other people, for example when you need to book a flight and confirm the details or if you need to call a cab. Not a lot of people check their email frequently that is why it is important to call to confirm details.

Be open to trying local foods. They are often spicy and delicious. However, they can have lots of garlic, so having chewing gum or fresh mint can keep your breath smelling fresh. Also, expect to have lots of company. This can be a fun experience if you are open to it and you are not afraid of socializing with strangers.

Choose your dressing carefully. Try and cover up as much as possible. Some places are particularly religious and they will not take too kindly to you exposing your body. You can think about carrying some wraps, which you can use to cover yourself up. Some nights can also get pretty cold, so make sure to bring something warm.

If you can spare some extra cash to hire a local driver or guide, then it will be a good idea. You will be able to learn a lot about the country, plus access areas that you might have otherwise not known about, if you were not with a local.

Plan how much time you would like to spend in the country. Give yourself ample time to get around and enjoy your time. It will take you a couple of days to visit some of the main areas. So, plan to travel when you are not under pressure from family or work obligations.
