Discovering the Lightest Laptops

By Joseph Robertson

There is this general approach to buying technology. Advertising plays a heavy role in it - and regularly people are not just taken down the incorrect trail, but they get a unacceptable experience from what they should get. In terms of laptops, folks will search for the quickest, lightest, and cheapest laptop for a certain size range that they need.

My approach to buying laptops is one of value - but the value in a portable can be difficult to encapsulate. This also is dependent upon what the laptop computer is going to be used for. As an example, if I want to get a laptop PC to do mobile image processing work, or programming or 3d modeling, then I need a portable with a fair quantity of power and a fair sized screen. This would suggest at least a 15" screen with some good power. Vis finding the lightest laptop, I'm off to a poor start here.

Naturally we can go looking for the lightest laptop of a certain class, but let's imagine we need a laptop exclusively for mobile computing, not heavy image processing or video editing or anything enormous like that. In which case we will be able to easily glance at the lightest laptops out there - those in the 11-13" category. Personally I consider 11" too little so looking into the 13" category we can definitely find something wonderful.

The lightest laptop can easily be found by looking at weight. Remember value however - the lightest laptop isn't invariably the best, or even a good portable computer. There are a couple ways a company will create lighter laptops. A typical way is to remove things, or cut corners - lighter less expensive materials allow for creating less expensive light laptops. Often though, the cheaper the materials the heavier the laptop computer is. So that the lightest of laptops are really sure to be good quality.

If you were to go looking for the lightest 13" laptop you would find a Samsung model - but I prefer Apple's Air laptops. They are just a little heavier than the Samsungs (by a few oz) but they come with some advantages. First the current line of Apple laptops are the sole laptops with bodies milled out of one solid piece of metal - no other portable computer has a stronger body than Apple's. The second is that Apple has some of the best client service in the world, with systems that hold value.

All in all, if you are trying to find the lightest laptop - do not simply look at numbers. The worth in the system is deeper than the details.
