Before you start mountain biking for the first time, there are some things you want to prepare and practice before you decide to go down the mountain. While this sport is lots of fun, it isn't without danger.
To get prepared and ready for mountain biking, take your bike to a flat area with a non-intimidating hill nearby it. There you can get ready for your debut as a mountain biker.
First things first, test out your pedals. While you are riding around, practice removing and replacing each foot from your pedals. This is especially important if you have a toe clip or clipless style of pedal.
When riding, you should have your elbows and knees bent. Neither should ever be locked. Your elbows should be kind of bent and your body shouldn't be tense. The seat should be high enough so your legs extend 70 to 90 percent while pedaling.
While mountain biking you will be doing a lot of coasting and standing on your pedals. To practice this, while riding stand up on your pedals and keep your legs and your elbows bent. Also practice shifting your body weight toward the back of the bike.
Next to try is pedaling while standing. Stand up and practice pedalling in this position. This will feel different when pedaling in a higher gear and a lower gear, so practice this in different gears.
The ride down a hill is not usually without it's rough spots. To practice control, try riding off of curbs at different speeds. Start slow and then work your way up until you feel comfortable riding off of the curb.
Once you have mastered these beginning techniques, you will be better prepared to take it to the next level and begin mountain biking! Remember to have fun, and wear protective gear!
