Explore Incredible New Zealand on Bike

By Scott Souness

Touring New Zealand's wild and wonderful backcountry on a mountain bike is a great way for budding adventurers to put their outdoor survival skills to the ultimate test. All are welcome to go on a multi day bike tour of the country - guided circuits that cater to cyclists of all ages, skills and fitness levels are available.

Unspoiled by pollution or mass urbanization, much of New Zealand is still a vast, untouched wilderness of open pastures, craggy mountains, shimmering lakes and majestic glaciers. Needless to say there are plenty of places to explore on a mountain biking. Many cyclists enjoy the challenge of venturing into a remote back country trail that takes them into a hidden world of secluded beauty and isolation. Each bike tour allows for plenty of breaks for riders to catch their breath and also to explore and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.

Tours can last anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. Short tours are great for leisurely jaunts around the countryside while the longer tours are the domain of hardcore endurance cyclists looking to challenge themselves and their equipment to the breaking point. Regardless of length or difficulty, each tour package includes accommodation, food, bikes, guides, cycling equipment and more. All tours can be adjusted for duration and difficulty depending on the individual requirements of the riders - the emphasis is on making each rider happy and not on offering a one-size-fits-all package.

The duration and difficulty of the bike tour depends on its location and the terrain it covers. Here are three popular bike tour packages:

The Weka - This is one of the most popular South Island rides. Hugging the coastal roads of the South Island's rugged West Coast, the Weka tour sticks closely to the historic Otago Rail Trail. A challenging 13 day mixed terrain tour, the Weka gives cyclists the chance to put their mountain and road biking skills to the ultimate test. A physically demanding journey, riders doing the Weka can expect to cover 950 kilometres in a loop around the South Island. A support vehicle is available throughout the entire trip for any cyclist who wants to take a break.

Thermal Cycle - The Thermal Cycle tour takes riders on a 5 day jaunt across the North Island. The 322 kilometre journey highlights the North Island's unique geologically diversity. Riders can expect to see active volcanoes, spurting geysers and hot springs. The Thermal Cycle tour also gives riders the opportunity to experience New Zealand's native Maori culture in Rotorua.

Deep South Ride - This 14 day trek makes a complete circuit of the South Island, starting and ending at Christchurch by way of Queenstown and Milford Sound. Notable stops along the way include Arthur's Pass, Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glaciers, Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Basin among many others. Half-way through the trip riders are given a full day of rest and relaxation in the resort town of Queenstown before being whisked away south to Milford Sound and 6 more days of nonstop adventure.
